Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment
2005-2006 Program Description
Program Name: Project START
Program Design: Project START is a two-year program.
The design leads participating teachers toward increased professional
autonomy. During the first year of program participation, the support
provider guides and directs both program activities and reflective
teaching practice. Participating teachers, in their first semester,
participate in CFASST year-one events 1-4 and attend two release
days to study the content in induction standards 19: English learners
and 20: Special populations. In the second semester, first-year
participating teachers complete CFASST events 5-7 and attend two
more release days to work on induction standards 17: Diversity and
18: Health. During the four release days, participating teachers
meet with curriculum specialists and also work on their IIPs with
their support providers. First-year teachers must also demonstrate
competency in the technology induction standard by either taking
a series of workshops or testing out.
During the second-year of program participation, the support provider
guides and directs both program activities and reflective teaching
practice. Second-year teachers participate in CFASST Year-Two CFASST
events while at the same time fulfilling diversity training and
health requirements through a series of after-school Seminars for
Success. Year-two participating teachers also attend two release
days to work on aligning their curriculum with the state frameworks
and local and state assessment.
First-year and second-year teachers are matched with support providers
(peer coaches) who teach in the same content area as their participating
teachers as often as possible. Nearly all participating teachers
are matched with support providers by site. Special Education teachers
are eligible for participation in Project START. Additional activities
for participating teachers include New Teacher Training Institute
(NTTI), orientation and the end-of-year colloquium.
During the 2005-2006 school year, a teacher on special assignment
will serve as director of the Project START program. The project
director will work with the Assistant Superintendent of Education
and Assessment Services, a CSUF contact, and an AUHSD liaison. The
director creates and monitors the budget. The director also administers
the Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) at CSUF and works closely
with nine curriculum specialists and five CFASST trainers and several
diversity trainers. The director also attends regional and State
BTSA meetings, coordinates bi-monthly advisory meetings, trainings,
and Seminars for Success, administers local and state evaluation
activities, and assists in the preparation and implementation of
the program improvement plan. The project director reports to the
Assistant Superintendent of Education and Assessment Services, whose
responsibilities include overseeing the director position, Seminars
for Success, and supervising the preparation and implementation
of the program improvement plan. Eight lead support providers, an
FSTO representative, a Special Education representative, and administrative
liaison, a CSUF liaison, a beginning teacher, a human resource representative,
and one project director comprise the Advisory Board. These individuals
participate in bi-monthly meetings designed to address program issues
and drive program improvement. Through on-going program assessment,
the Advisory Board has successfully implemented district-wide project
START events that complement site level activities.
